A modern, detailed view of the adventure
The Dhaulagiri Circuit Trek is one of Nepal’s most demanding and remote high-altitude trekking adventures, encircling Mount Dhaulagiri (8,167m), the seventh-highest mountain in the world. This trek is designed for experienced trekkers seeking raw wilderness, dramatic mountain scenery, and a true expedition-style Himalayan experience far from established trekking routes.
The trail leads through deep river valleys, dense forests, and glacial terrain before entering the high alpine zones of the Hidden Valley. Towering peaks, massive glaciers, and steep mountain walls dominate the landscape, making the Dhaulagiri Circuit one of the most visually striking treks in Nepal.
The Dhaulagiri Circuit Trek is classified as a challenging trek and is recommended only for highly fit and experienced trekkers. Daily walking hours often range from 6–9 hours, with steep ascents, rough terrain, and frequent river crossings. The trek involves camping, glacier travel, and crossing two high mountain passes: French Pass (5,360m) and Dhampus Pass (5,240m). While no technical climbing is required, prior high-altitude trekking experience, strong endurance, and proper acclimatization are essential.
The trek begins with a drive from Pokhara to Beni, followed by a gradual ascent through the Myagdi Valley along rivers, forests, and small villages. As the route progresses, teahouses become scarce and full camping support is required, especially beyond Italian Base Camp and Dhaulagiri Base Camp.
After reaching Dhaulagiri Base Camp, the trail crosses the high-altitude French Pass into the Hidden Valley before descending via Dhampus Pass into the Annapurna region. The Dhaulagiri Circuit Trek typically takes 18–21 days to complete and requires special permits and experienced guides. This trek is regarded as one of Nepal’s ultimate trekking challenges, offering unmatched solitude, adventure, and Himalayan grandeur.
