A modern, detailed view of the adventure
Karnali River is one of the most popular rafting rivers in Nepal. The Karnali is spectacular and remote with most of the river being covered with a jungle lined canyon. The river is perfect for those looking to engage in big class white water rafting and exploring the wilderness and watching for vast wildlife. The Karnali River is also the longest river in Nepal, covering most of the far western part of the country, also known as Nepal's Wild West. Rapids along the river range from class one to a class five, with the lower sections of the river being the wildest and the most difficult. The majority of the area surrounding the river is wild, pristine, and untouched with a majority of Nepal's wildlife.
Due to its wild and remote nature, the Karnali river is only suitable for experienced adventurers. The Karnali river has a good mix of challenging rapids with a good number of moderates to get your heart pumping. Though the rapids are challenging, during the lower canyon sections the river is also wild and un-rafting managed. Gear for multi day rafting is recommended. Good physical condition is required.
As you explore the valley’s dramatic canyons, the rapids get even more exciting. From the Seti River confluence to The Elbow, a bend in the rapids at Lohore Khola, the steepness of the valley increases, creating a series of powerful rapids that define the ‘technical heart’ of the Karnali River rafting experience.
The expedition starts in Surkhet, a frontier town. From Surkhet, there is a 2-day trek through Sal lowland forests to the village of Sauli in Western Nepal, after which the rafting expedition begins. After about 180 km of river in the Abdication of the Road at Chisopani, the expedition reaches the Northern Borders of Royal Bardia National Park.
Following the challenging rapids on the lower canyon, the river becomes less turbulent as it descend.
