The Lower Mustang Trek is a fascinating experience. It takes you into the heart of Mustang, an ancient, remote area of Nepal, Upper Mustang is a high desert area, While Lower Mustang has a high desert area, it also has a great diversity of travel options, including some incredibly remote places, beautiful rivers, traditional villages, and wide open spaces. Lower Mustang has beautiful and diverse options that are perfect for both cultural and natural explorations. The trail is less busy than many other spots, enabling a very immersive experience.
The entire area was once a part of the ancient Kingdom of Lo, and the influence of this ancient period can still be seen in the many traditional Tibetan architectural styles, large and small stupas and boundless Tibetan prayer flags. Large and ancient monasteries, beautiful red rock canyons, fascinating archaeology, and many other aspects of the Regions.
The Lower Mustang Trek is classified as a moderate trek. It is required that trekkers are in good physical condition and comfortable walking 5-7 hours on a daily basis. The moderate trek will be away from the Upper Mustang and other treks that are very populated. The area is remote, the high desert and high end of the valley areas, and varies in temperatures which means other preparation and acclimatization for the treks must be made. The journey includes many different types of high rocky terrain, steep areas, high winds, and treks that must be high on the rocks.
The trek usually begins in Jomsom, or Kagbeni, and follows the Kali Gandaki River to Lower Mustang. Trekkers pass through traditional villages, like Marpha, Tukuche, and Geling, and can explore ancient monasteries, local markets, and cultural sites. The Lower Mustang Trek generally takes 7-10 days and provides a great combination of adventure, culture, and scenery.
