A modern, detailed view of the adventure
One of the most mystical, unexplored places in the world, the Upper Mustang Trek leads you to the formerly closed Mustang Kingdom in northern Nepal. Great, unexplored, high-altitude desert landscapes await, filled with towering cliffs, deep canyons, and an array of culturally Tibetan desert-dwelling communities. One can step back to see an area that has been untouched by the tides of modern civilization and continue to preserve the culture of centuries past.
The Upper Mustang Trek is located directly north of Annapurna, a popular destination in Nepal. The area is renowned for the stunning views of ancient monasteries and red canyons. The stone structures and other-worldly beauty create an unforgettable experience for adventurers in the Himalayas.
Upper Mustang can be classified as a moderately to highly challenging trek. Its altitude range, remote location, and desert like high environment, contribute to making this a more challenging trek. Participants should be in shape for 5-7 hours of trekking each day, and this trek should be taken slowly as most of the elevation gain is above the 4000 meter mark. The trek traverses arid, dry, and windy environments and poses other challenges as it is the desert.
The trek usually begins in either Kagbeni or Jomsom, and trekkers head north through the Kali Gandaki Valley towards Lo Manthang, the upper Mustang’s walled capital. On the trail, trekkers are treated to ancient monasteries, villages, and other sacred sites, allowing them to gradually adjust to the high-altitude desert. The trek takes 10-14 days in total and provides an incredible experience in a remote Himalayan region rich in culture and breathtaking views.
